There is plenty of airflow too and it is easy to build and not expensive. However, chicken coops can come with a hefty price tag which is why lots of people build their own. In most cases, it will be cheaper to build your own chicken coop. Whatever you decide for your coop, it needs to be comfortable for both your hens and you. Try to ensure that the coop design suits both you and them with ample space for the girls and easy cleaning for you. This narrow but tall coop is ideal for just 1-6 chickens, but its height allows a person to get inside and clean it out.

Shed Free Chicken Coop Plans

Overall, this is great if you are looking for a small yet sturdy chicken coop that will last for years to come. The Frame Chicken Coop is ideal for those looking for a small, yet portable tractor. It is shaped in a triangular prism with an enclosed run directly underneath. It is a great choice if you are looking for an easy and cheap build. It holds up to three chickens and is a great choice if you are looking for a movable chicken coop. A good chicken coop is worth its weight in gold as it will keep your chickens safe and warm.

Size of the Coop

With opening windows and a full-size door, this is a luxury coop for larger flocks. With 100 square feet of floor space, it’s one of the more difficult plans to build. They come in a wide range of sizes and shapes, so there is something for every flock. As the name suggests, walk-in chicken coops are hen houses designed with a large access door so that you can walk in. We wanted the chicken coop elevated so the chickens could go under it for some shade and also to prevent it getting water in it like the last one. It’s important to remember that your chickens are living things that want to feel safe and experience happiness and stress. You’re building it, but the chicken coop is going to be your chickens’ home. We love this stylish chicken coop because of the funky design, and that it has an attached garden! You could grow treats for your chickens there or herbs for your kitchen.

Free Chicken Coop Plans With Simple DIY Instructions

Pallets are like treasures for homesteaders, it’s often free and you can build anything with it. If you can get pallets easily (which it is) then you might be able to build this coop for almost $0, no cost (other than the optional paint job). The size of Pallet Palace is rather big, but you can easily adjust it by the number of pallets if you don’t have too many chickens. The guys at BarnGeek said that this exact chicken coop is being sold for $2,000, but they managed to build it for free with leftover lumbers from another project. The biggest plus of this plan is the ease of access, you can gather eggs, feed, and water your chickens without hassle.

How to Build a Chicken Coop

If your birds are in confinement, a dust bath is non-negotiable. Birds that live in enclosures are more susceptible to contracting parasites. Thus they need access to a place to take their daily baths. Of course, you will need feeders and drinkers for your flock. The feeder can be hung in the coop, but leave the drinker outside otherwise;, it will contribute excess moisture to the coop’s air.

Most people want to build their own chicken coop to keep costs down. You would think that a chicken coop is simply a box for them to sleep in, but it does do a bit more than that and having the right plan makes your life a lot easier. This way, you can add a few more hens to your flock without needing to build another coop. Dust baths also provide an element of entertainment for your chickens.

House votes for possible TikTok ban but app won't go away soon Los Angeles Times

kaldis social house

TikTok has lobbied hard against the legislation, pushing the app’s 170 million U.S. users — many of whom are young — to call Congress and voice opposition. But the ferocity of the pushback angered lawmakers on Capitol Hill, where there is broad concern about Chinese threats to the U.S. and where few members use the platform themselves. A standalone bill with a shorter, six-month selling deadline passed the House in March by an overwhelming bipartisan vote as Democrats and Republicans voiced national security concerns about the app’s owner, the Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd.

Congress is threatening to ban TikTok. Here’s what you should know

TikTok has denied assertions that it could be used as a tool of the Chinese government and has said it has not shared U.S. user data with Chinese authorities. The bill’s quick path through Congress is extraordinary because it targets one company and because Congress has taken a hands-off approach to tech regulation for decades. Lawmakers had failed to act despite efforts to protect children online, safeguard users’ privacy and make companies more liable for content posted on their platforms, among other measures. But the TikTok ban reflects widespread concerns from lawmakers about China.

I takes my time to personally train and empower them so that the people who make the coffee are just as happy as those who order it. For me, this is not just an investment in the future of the coffee shop, but an investment in the community. The U.S. government has not publicly provided evidence that shows TikTok shared U.S. user data with the Chinese government or tinkered with the company’s popular algorithm, which influences what Americans see. Since opening in 2014, the staff has grown from four to over 30, and the store has expanded to more than double its original café space. He said he thinks there could have been less restrictive ways to go after the company that wouldn’t result in a total ban or threaten free speech.

When the customer comes in, I don’t want them to think about getting coffee, but to think they are supporting the community…I want to be welcoming – I want to create relationships with customers.

Questions swirl over the future of TikTok. Who could own it? How will the platform operate?

In 2020, federal courts blocked an executive order issued by then-President Trump to ban TikTok after the company sued on the grounds that the order violated free speech and due process rights. His administration brokered a deal that would have had U.S. corporations Oracle and Walmart take a large stake in TikTok. The sale never went through for a number of reasons; one was China, which imposed stricter export controls on its technology providers. The House’s overwhelming vote to ban TikTok unless it is freed from Chinese control suggests that a ban might be coming soon. The company has indicated that it would likely go to court to try to block the law if it passes, arguing it would deprive the app’s millions of users of their 1st Amendment rights.

TikTok may be banned in the U.S. Here’s what happened when India did it

Since mid-March, TikTok has spent $5 million on TV ads opposing the legislation, according to AdImpact, an advertising tracking firm. The ads have included a diverse group of content creators, including a nun, extolling the positive impacts of the platform on their lives and arguing a ban would trample on the 1st Amendment. The company has also encouraged its users to contact Congress, and some lawmakers have received profanity-laced calls. The company has good reason to think a legal challenge could be successful, having seen some success in previous legal fights over its operations in the U.S. In November, a federal judge blocked a Montana law that would ban TikTok use across the state after the company and five content creators who use the platform sued. Members of both parties, along with intelligence officials, have worried that Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to hand over American user data or direct the company to suppress or boost TikTok content favorable to its interests.

Dozens of states and the federal government have put in place TikTok bans on government devices. Texas’ ban was challenged last year by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which argued in a lawsuit that the policy was impeding academic freedom because it extended to public universities. After UMG pulled its catalog from the app and as political pressure - or even a domestic ban - threatens its viability, artists and their creative and business teams are pondering a world without it. Pacific Tavern opened in May 2010 and is located inside the Smith Hotel Brooklyn. Since then, Golden Spork winner Chef Lang has been serving both quality interpretations of classic dishes and daring new ventures into the uncharted territories of food.

The House has passed legislation that would ban TikTok in the United States if the popular social media platform’s China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake within a year, but don’t expect the app to go away any time soon. AWD Adventure Subaru Toyota Lift Kits & Accessories ADF Anderson Design & Fabrication

Paired with the 17 inch Method 314 wheels, they look great and give the car all the grip it could ever need on the trails. It took Patrick weeks to build this lift kit by hand, but I think the final product has been well worth it. Innovation and continuing to push the limits of the Subaru platform is what they seem to do best at ADF and this build further cements that reputation. However, if your vehicle is out of warranty or if you don’t mind the risk, a bigger CVT cooler is a great way to keep the temps lower after a bigger tire installation.

Exclusive ADF Outback Walk-Around Video

Patrick and his brother both mentioned how well the Patagonias ride on the streets without without sacrificing offroad grip. Safeguard your vehicle against unexpected damages, both on and off the open road. Be prepared for any adventure that may come your way, ready to embrace the unknown at a moment's notice.

Customer Testimonial

Patrick worked with the folks over at Nameless Performance to get an exhaust that would fit correctly after the lift. The stock exhaust was not fitting properly after the subframe spacers were installed. This Outback is lifted 5 inches over a stock Outback such as the Premium, and Limited trim levels since it still includes the longer struts that Subaru put on the Wilderness Edition. In order to do this without damaging the suspension and drivetrain components, Patrick custom designed a large number of vital parts. I asked Patrick if there were any things that could be done to mitigate the extra stress placed on the CVT by bigger tires. But he said that he has seen situations where people have had warranty work denied due to the presence of an aftermarket CVT cooler.

Roof Rack And Custom Fairing That Led To A World Famous Product

But with the OBWE being a wagon, there is a drone in the vehicle at certain RPM’s that makes it a little hard to use as a family car. Patrick plans to install their dual chamber muffler to quiet it down even more for daily driving comfort. You’ll also notice the grade 10 stainless steel bolts and powder coating that has been applied to the spacers. Since these components are in direct contact with the unibody, it’s important that they don’t rust and cause permanent damage to the car. Simply painting a spacer usually doesn’t prevent rust since it eventually wears off. The team over at ADF fitted the Outback with a set of Milestar Patagonia A/T Pro tires in a massive 265/65R17.

Bigger CVT Coolers: A Good Idea For Offroading, But There Are Risks

While the Outback will never be a Jeep or a “real” 4×4, they can be fantastic cars for heading off the pavement. The biggest thing in my opinion is the shorter gearing of the Outback Wilderness. This means that the Wilderness Edition has a bit more torque at lower speeds which makes it great for offroad use –  especially when climbing steep inclines. One of the most common mistakes I see among Subaru owners is trying to recover their car from the front tow point. I’ve seen them rip right out of bumpers creating a deadly hazard and I routinely try to warn people about the dangers of it. The team at ADF got to work and started designing a wind fairing to cut down on drag and wind noise.

For this reason, it’s important to keep them maintained with regular fluid changes and even cooling mods when possible. The 265/65R17 tires measure out to about 30.5 inches in overall diameter which is usually not a size that would fit on a Subaru. But with the 4 inch custom lift, they fit on the car perfectly without any rubbing issues. If someone wants to install a bigger cooler, it may be wise to consult with your dealership first. Ask to speak with the Service Director if possible and explain that you want to make some improvements to the car’s reliability since you plan on driving it the way it was intended. You can get a feeling for how they will handle warranty claims if you have aftermarket parts on your car. They currently have a 3 inch cat back exhaust with 5 inch single can mufflers.

They also installed a set of Diode Dynamics rock lights in the wheel wells. While some people might install them just for looks, I actually really like being able to see where the obstacles are under my car when I’m in rock gardens or other rugged sections of the trail. Your spotter can also use rock lights to determine how to properly guide you through difficult segments without damaging your undercarriage. Gear up your Toyota Highlander for off-road exploration with our high-performance adventuring products. From durable skid plates to specialized suspension components, enhance your journey with style and rugged reliability.

Having ditch lights lets the driver see potential hazards on the side of the vehicle. Things like downed trees that could break out a window, or large rocks that might not be easily visible can be illuminated with a set of properly aimed ditch lights. And of course, these were mounted using a set of ADF ditch light brackets. Patrick designed a five inch spacer to replace the one inch version that came on the stock Outback Wilderness. You can see it tucked up against the unibody of the Subaru above the sway bar reinforcement brackets. The Method 314 wheels in 17×7.5 come with a 30mm offset and they opted to install a one inch spacer to help bring the wheels out even further.

In order to do this, the 3 inch front subframe spacers, 2.25 inch carrier bearing spacers, and the 5 inch rear multilink spacers all help to achieve optimal angles. Check out the photos I took of the custom mounts and spacers Patrick built. One thing that I really like is how Patrick designed a long support bracket to tie in the front and back rear subframe spacers for additional structural integrity. When a vehicle gets lifted this high above stock, retaining rigidity around the various chassis components is important for proper handling and safety.

This allows the CV axles and the front control arms to sit close to their intended angles without causing damage. In my opinion, and the opinion of many other enthusiasts, the biggest drawback with the current model Subarus for offroading is the CVT transmission. They’re very efficient and smooth but they don’t give as much room for driver input and don’t take well to prolonged “abuse” on the trails.

With the extra lighting, you can get a clear picture of any damage that may have occurred and see which parts need to be fixed without fumbling around with a flashlight. In recent years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting and befriending Patrick. I’m regularly impressed by the technical innovation within his business and his relentless commitment to growing a brand that produces some of the strongest parts for offroad Subarus. ADF Rear Strut Spacers are designed to accommodate for varying loads or to level uneven vehicles. Failing to correct the driveline angles may result in vibration and premature u-joint failure.

I appreciate that Subaru has begun to cater to the large group of enthusiasts who have been offroading their cars for years by creating more trail-friendly vehicles. The Wilderness Edition is a step in the right direction and seeing people modifying them further is even more encouraging. Little things like these spacers and mounts are what often get overlooked when thinking about lifting a Subaru more than two inches. Most folks completely forget the extra work involved with lifting to three inches and above.

Some 3.86 million cruisers passed through Port Everglades in 2018. On November 4, 2016, world's largest cruise ships (Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class vessels Allure, Oasis and Harmony) came together off Port Everglades for the first time. Carrying together over 16,000 passengers, the three liners joined up to celebrate the USA-homeporting of Harmony of the Seas (newest Oasis ship) in Fort Lauderdale. Of the three ships, Harmony was the newest but also the biggest - even though by only 1 ft (30 cm) and 1700 tons. Harmony OTS was finishing her inaugural Transatlantic repositioning crossing.

Meanwhile, the port is also extremely close to the Fort Lauderdale airport. The airport is just three miles away, or about 10 minutes. In other words you can fly in and be at your ship within an hour — even accounting for getting off the plane and getting to your ride. If you’re traveling to Fort Lauderdale from Miami or Orlando, the Brightline train is a good option. You take the train to Fort Lauderdale, then can hop in a taxi, Lyft, or Uber to get to the cruise port, which is only 4 miles away. Take advantage of being a 10-minute drive from Las Olas Boulevard stores, restaurants, and nightlife.

Farther away but still accessible are Miami International, just under 30 miles south, and Palm Beach International (PBI), which is 50 miles north. If you're traveling to Miami, look for flights on American, Delta, Frontier, Sun Country and United. From Palm Beach, fly Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southern Airways Express, Southwest, Spirit and United. Note that Port Everglades does not offer wheelchair service. As a rule of thumb, the hotels that are away from the beach typically have better prices and more benefits to attract cruisers. Those mega hotels right on the water usually make you pay dearly to park and often have resort fees as well. Look for hotels near the airport or those within walking distance of the port for the best deals.

By Broward County law (the county where Fort Lauderdale is), cab fares are regulated by the government. The Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi, with multiple stops and commentary, provides easy access to the promenade. Other stops include the Hilton Marina and Convention Center, Beach Place and Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. Water Taxi tickets cost $28 for adults, $23 for seniors 65 and older and military personnel, and $14 for kids ages 5 to 11. Fort Lauderdale is a cosmopolitan city with all types of restaurants, from casual diners to fine dining. You can find everything from Southern comfort food and local seafood dishes to Caribbean and Latin American cuisines, Asian fusion and more.

All of these restaurants are within a 20-minute drive from the port. If Seafarers' House doesn't have what you need before embarkation, there's a CVS at 1700 Federal Highway, about a 10-minute drive from port and close to the hotels we mentioned above. There's also a Publix grocery store (1940 Cordova Road) and Total Wine (1906 Cordova Road) in that area in the Harbor Shops plaza.

Parking Fees

Your time with an agent will only take a few minutes, and then you’ll be ready to start your cruise. The good news is that parking at any cruise terminal in Port Everglades is convenient and easy. Each terminal has a nearby parking area, typically a garage (Palm or Heron). Driving to Port EvergladesIf you are already in South Florida, then you can simply drive to the port. One thing that you’ll need to keep in mind is if you are sailing from Northport (Terminals 2 or 4) or from Midport (Terminals 18-29). Depending on your cruise terminal, you want to use a different entrance to get into the port so that you can get to your ship faster.

Honduras is Port Everglades' largest trade partner by shipping volume, including total TEUs. Over USD 2,12 billion worth of goods are annually shipped through the seaport. As container shipping (cargo) port, in 2013 Port Everglades was ranked Florida's 1st and USA's 10th busiest, handling over 1 million TEUs. Following President Trump's executive order on immigration, in the end of January 2017 Port Everglades officials reported cruise tourists being detained by US Customs and Border Protection. All detainees had to provide background info about them, their families and also their past life in their native countries. The new President's order was signed on Jan 27, and included a 90-day ban on travel to the USA by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

Passengers can travel to the Overseas Passenger Terminal by train, bus, ferry, light rail, private vehicle, taxi or rideshare. Once in Seward, follow the signs to the Alaska Railroad Dock. Cross Oak Street Bridge, turn left on Broadway, turn right on Granville, cross bridge and move to left lane. In the event of a last minute change in pier assignments, signage will indicate the assigned terminal for your particular ship. Turn left at Port Terminal Blvd. (there is a traffic light at the intersection).

In 2016, the cruise port completed pilot testing of APC kiosks (abbrev "Automated Passport Control") in 2 terminals. This is yet another CBP initiative to fasten the passenger inspection process. From the Port Authority Bus Terminal, take the 119 bus to Bayonne. The 119 bus travels along Kennedy Boulevard into Bayonne and stops on request every three blocks. When you reach 33rd Street and Kennedy Boulevard in Bayonne, you will be at the closest point on the bus route to the cruise port. Call one of the three Bayonne cab companies to drive you to the cruise port, which is about three miles east of Kennedy Boulevard.

Back on board, Gabree recommends The Chef’s Table for a truly memorable meal — and I, too, can attest to this. While on board a Caribbean sailing with the cruise line, I had the chance to indulge in this chef- and sommelier-led multi-course food and wine pairing adventure. The company operates its own lodges, rail cars and motorcoaches for exploration of Alaska's interior and beyond. The waters are teeming with marine life, like king salmon, while the land is decorated by the colorful coats of Denali National Park’s “big five” – including grizzly bears, wolves, moose, Dall sheep and caribou.

Many cruise ships visit marine wonderlands like Glacier Bay National Park and Prince William Sound, where guests visit tidewater glaciers and watch them calve into the ocean. Per the pro, travelers can “choose between a menu of included excursions such as kayaking, paddleboarding, hiking, zodiac cruises, whale watching, and more.” All in all, UnCruise really does offer something for everyone. Burgers, Japanese food, leafy cafés, spots that specialize in desserts, and even a food hall (another Royal Caribbean first) with five different food stands ensure that nobody will feel left out. Given the sheer volume of passengers, however, knowing how long you will have to wait for a table might be another matter entirely. "Alaska cruises tend not to be the first-time cruiser," Scholes told BI. "I don't really see Icon of the Seas doing a Norwegian Fjord or Alaska trip." The other 21 smaller vessels tend to have more specialized itineraries, Patrick Scholes, the managing director of lodging and leisure-equity research at Truist Securities, told Business Insider. Royal Caribbean is set to launch four more megaships by 2028 — representing about a third of its total fleet.

Without falling into stereotypes or preconceptions, I prepare myself for a friendly outspokenness on the part of my fellow seafarers that may not comply with modern DEI standards. I believe in meeting people halfway, and so the day before flying down to Miami, I visited what remains of Little Italy to purchase a popular T-shirt that reads DADDY’S LITTLE MEATBALL across the breast in the colors of the Italian flag. My wife recommended that I bring one of my many T-shirts featuring Snoopy and the Peanuts gang, as all Americans love the beagle and his friends. But I naively thought that my meatball T-shirt would be more suitable for conversation-starting. Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in five categories; large-ship ocean cruise lines have ships that can carry 600 to 2,199 passengers. The market for cruisers is rife with competition, and operators are constantly tweaking and upgrading their products to pull in new customers. An example of this is the Icon of the Seas, the latest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet — a behemoth that is redefining what is possible at sea and on board.

The ship also boasts a water park with the “tallest slide at sea”, as well as a 10-deck-high zipline and a massive poolside movie theatre. The ship measures an incredible 1,188 feet, and has capacity for almost 7,000 guests and 2,300 crew. Guests have their pick of 2,867 staterooms over 16 guest decks, and can make their way through the vessel by using one of the boat’s 24 guest elevators.

Even a Pinnacle needs to be a Suite to access this level of corned-beef hash. It looks like a hodgepodge of domes and minarets, tubes and canopies, like Istanbul had it been designed by idiots. Vibrant, oversignifying colors are stacked upon other such colors, decks perched over still more decks; the only comfort is a row of lifeboats ringing its perimeter.

Watch: The world's largest cruise ship landed in Miami — here's what it's like on board

I may have failed to mention that all this time, the Icon of the Seas has not left port. As the fiery mango of the subtropical setting sun makes Miami’s condo skyline even more apocalyptic, the ship shoves off beneath a perfunctory display of fireworks. After the sun sets, in the far, dark distance, another circus-lit cruise ship ruptures the waves before us.

Looking ahead, Royal Caribbean plans to return to the basics: smaller cruise ships.

Wallace’s stateroom, at least, had a view of the ocean, a kind of cheap eternity. There's nothing like watching a child's eyes light up when they meet Mickey and Minnie, or Elsa from Frozen, or Spider-Man. But the amusement-park-level attractions, carefully orchestrated kids' programming, entertainment, and family dining on Disney ships are also big wows. Perhaps most noteworthy, though, is that these ships manage to cater to both families with kids and adults sans kids. Grown-ups get separate hangout spots such as an adults-only nightlife area, pool, and specialty dining venues.

True to the name of the cruise line, the ship will start its life by sailing on seven-night itineraries in the western and eastern parts of the Caribbean. (It's important to note, though, that Royal Caribbean ships do sail all over the world, not just around the Caribbean). Like the parent company Royal Caribbean Group, the ship will be based in Miami, and initial sailings, at least for all of 2024, will depart from that port. Royal Caribbean’s massive new ship, Icon of the Seas, passed its inaugural round of sea trials with flying colors, bringing it one step closer to hitting the open ocean with passengers, the cruise line announced late last month. If all goes as planned, the record-breaking vessel will begin sailing in the Caribbean in January 2024.

The four ships mentioned above aren't the only giant new cruise vessels to debut in the last year or two. Europe-based Costa Cruises and Aida Cruises also have unveiled massive new ships since 2018 that rank among the 10 biggest cruise ships ever built -- Costa Smeralda and AIDAnova. We aren't including them here as they primarily are aimed at a European crowd. AIDAnova, in particular, is designed just for the German-speaking market. The most popular destination is the Caribbean, which absorbs about a third of industry capacity, followed by the Mediterranean and then other European waters.

He wasn’t saying “pendejo.” He was saying “Pinnacle.” The dining room was for Pinnacles only, all those older people rolling in like the tide on their motorized scooters. A fifth, even bigger Oasis Class vessel -- Wonder of the Seas -- is expected to debut in 2022. The vessel currently is under construction at a shipyard in France. All four of the vessels, moreover, currently are open for bookings well into 2022. Indeed, Mardi Gras is available for booking through April 2023.

By offering a variety of experiences and atmospheres at the waterpark, it seems to represent a larger goal of the ship. The rooms also incorporate some exciting features, such as an in-room slide and cinema in the three-story Ultimate Family Townhouse and a kid's alcove area in the Family Infinite Balcony that lets youngsters feel like they have their own space. I believe that anyone who works for Royal Caribbean should be entitled to immediate American citizenship. They already speak English better than most of the passengers and, per the Serbian lady’s sales pitch above, better understand what America is as well. Crew members like my Panamanian cabin attendant seem to work 24 hours a day. A waiter from New Delhi tells me that his contract is six months and three weeks long.

Is It Dangerous To Use Cruise Control In The Rain Or Snow?

can you use cruise control in the rain

For all cruise control’s benefits, using it in rain or winter conditions isn’t a good idea. As a vehicle’s cruise control tries to sustain speed in inclement weather, tires may lose grip and cause an accident. So when raindrops fall or snow accumulates, human inputs are essential to avoid car accidents. Once you reach the desired miles per hour, press the “set speed” button to maintain it. If you want to go faster, press the appropriate button for an extra one or two mph.

Limitations of Cruise Control

When you’re using your car’s cruise control feature, don’t forget your defensive driving skills. The bare minimum of options with cruise control is on/off, set and cancel. Most have a resume function which restores your last speed, and most new ones have the ability to increase or decrease the speed in 1mph increments (and sometimes bigger jumps). Some systems also have a speed limiter option and more advanced systems use radar to detect the distance to the vehicle in front and adjust your speed to its speed while keeping a safe distance. Some vehicles will use the brakes or gears to slow you down if you drive downhill.

Come up to speed

Using cruise control at high speed, your automobile may hydroplane while approaching standing water. When driving in icy conditions, you risk slipping and eventually spinning out of control. One potential downside to using cruise control is that it can result in the driver having a reduced reaction time when they must respond quickly to an unexpected situation on the road.

Why You Shouldn’t Use Cruise Control On Icy Roads

This is simply because if you should have the bad fortune to hydroplane, cruise control is just going to make matters that much worse. The cruise control feature isn’t identical for all cars, including different models of the same brand. You may have either conventional or adaptive cruise control in your car. Some companies, like General Motors, have additional capabilities for this feature, such as Super Cruise. Or, when you’re feeling sleepy, it’s best to leave the cruise control turned off. Driving while tired isn’t a good idea in the first place, and a constant speed only adds to that.

Once you have some control you can correct your car and get centered back in your lane. Driving through wet roads at high speeds can cause your car to lose traction and hydroplane as your tires will rotate too fast to grip the roads properly. This is exacerbated by cruise control, which can require you to use your brakes to regain control of the vehicle.

Motorbiscuit reminds drivers that cruise control is not a hands-free driving feature. Distracted driving is a bad driving habit that can lead to crashes, so always stay alert. This can lead to hydroplaning, which means your vehicle spins out of control at high speeds. If this occurs while using cruise control, the use of breaks on your car can lead you to lose control and potentially spin out as both the brakes and tire will fail to gain any traction.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is the latest type of cruise control that’s becoming widely available in cars. ACC maintains your speed but incorporates sensors to measure the distance to the car ahead. Once you set a distance, the ACC adjusts your speed to ensure you stay at that distance — usually a car length or two. However, you still shouldn’t use cruise control for the reasons I’ve shared in this post. The poor visibility, skidding, and traffic-related hazards that often accompany driving in the rain make using cruise control a dangerous idea. Road grip and visibility are already major concerns when it’s raining.

Cruise control is a feature on some vehicles that allows the driver to take their foot off the accelerator while the onboard computer maintains the vehicle’s speed. Within cruise control, you can typically also adjust your speed up and down using buttons. While maneuvering on highways in normal conditions, lowering speed is a matter of easing off the gas pedal. With cruise control, you are locked in at a constant speed and have less time to reduce your speed. If you are driving in the rain, always, always disable your cruise control.

This encounter was scary enough that I learned my lesson and no longer drive with cruise control on if the road surface is wet or if there are icy roads. When you use cruise control for long road trips or even short highway trips this allows your car to maintain a steady speed instead of accelerating and decelerating constantly. Because you are maintaining a steady speed this allows your engine to not have to work as hard to keep your vehicle moving at a steady speed. This, in turn, allows your vehicle to get more miles per gallon out of that tank of gas which saves you money in the long run.

It can not only potentially help you get better gas mileage but also make driving much more comfortable. For example, some cars have a combined button to set the initial speed and accelerate. Others have fine-tuning buttons that you can click to increase or decrease your speed by a set amount, often one mph. If you should happen to find yourself behind the wheel of a motor vehicle while the rain is pounding down, you should always disable the cruise control.

Just a thin layer of water lying on pavement can send an unsuspecting car hydroplaning into another lane — the car's wheels skim along the water's surface instead of making contact with the road. Also, roads constantly accumulate oily substances loosed by car exhaust, and this residue settles deep into the pavement. Rain brings this oil back to the surface, making roads especially slippery during that first hour of downpour or misting.

Neither conventional nor adaptive cruise control can detect hazards or road conditions, regardless of whether the weather is inclement or pleasant. Rain will likely affect your visibility, and cruise control might adversely affect your alertness, control, and reaction times. Therefore, you shouldn’t use cruise control set at your normal speeds on any route in the rain. You should revise it and reduce the speed—and that is only if you choose to use cruise control. This isn’t really a problem with cruise control, it’s a problem with the driver’s decision to use cruise control.
